Diabetic Foot Care: 6 Things You Should Never Do.
Every Step Matters — Choose Safe Foot Care - Dr. Uday Ravi
Are you taking the right steps to protect your feet if you have diabetes? Daily foot care is important because diabetes can affect sensation and blood circulation, making some foot problems harder to notice and heal.
Small foot injuries should not be ignored. Here are 6 common things people with diabetes should avoid to help protect their feet.
1. ❌ Don’t Walk Barefoot
Walking barefoot can increase the risk of cuts, burns, blisters, and other injuries. Wear comfortable, protective footwear, including when walking around the home.
2. ❌ Don’t Ignore Cuts, Blisters, or Wounds
Even a small wound can require attention. Check your feet regularly and seek professional advice if a wound is not healing normally or shows concerning changes.
3. ❌ Don’t Use Very Hot Water
Reduced sensation can make it difficult to judge water temperature accurately. Very hot water may cause burns. Use comfortably warm water and check the temperature carefully.
4. ❌ Don’t Cut Corns or Calluses Yourself
Cutting corns or calluses with blades or sharp objects can cause cuts and infection. If you have troublesome calluses or corns, seek appropriate professional foot care.
5. ❌ Don’t Wear Tight or Uncomfortable Footwear
Poorly fitting footwear can create pressure points, blisters, and skin damage. Choose shoes that fit comfortably and provide adequate protection.
6. ❌ Don’t Delay Medical Attention for Non-Healing Wounds
A wound that is not healing, or a foot that becomes red, swollen, warm, painful, or changes colour, should be medically evaluated promptly.
